Formula 1 Grand Prix Safety & Our World "An
Observation" By Malcolm Pink
On the television last week was an
excellent programme on the merits of Health & Safety in the
early days of Formula 1 and the struggle Jackie Stuart and others
had of getting the car and track, builders/designer/owners but
chiefly fellow drivers to accept responsibility for the safety of
drivers participating in what was after all a sport.
In those days, I think seventies and
eighties, it was not unusual to kill four or five top drivers per
season and it was getting worse.

COSTLY health and safety rules have pulled the plug on
Southborough's cherished Christmas lights display.
Town councillors are desperately trying to find a way to abide
by the rules, but the future is looking bleak.
And the regulations, which would cost thousands to implement,
have been ridiculed by Councillor Jacqueline Jedrzejewski.

Sussex Health and Safety Inspectors are on the
CASE
In 2008/09, 180 employees were killed at work in Great Britain.
29.3 million working days were lost overall due to work-related ill
health and workplace injury. In many cases, simple health and
safety measures could have prevented the deaths, injury and ill
health that cause significant personal and economic loss.
Eastbourne will be part of a new initiative between local
Councils and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), when inspectors
visit around 150 workplaces on industrial estates in Eastbourne,
Wealden and Hastings.

European campaign on safe
maintenance
Working alongside the European Agency for Safety
and Health at Work, the HSE is supporting the Safe Maintenance
Campaign. Many of these activities are focused around the
European Week for Safety and Health at Work (starting Monday 25th
October 2010) and the theme of the two year 2010-11 healthy
workplaces campaign is Safe Maintenance.
The campaign is based on employers, employees
and their health and safety representatives working together.
The UK campaign includes the HSE’s “safe
maintenance healthcheck” which challenges maintenance
procedures actually in place.
As part of this campaign, there is the chance
to get involved in Good Practice Awards : these recognise
organisations that have found innovative ways to make maintenance a
consistent part of their workplace management.
One million men must get off their
sofas to cut early deaths
IOSH supports
National Men’s Health Week, which is part of the MHF’s
